Llythyr gan Beatrix Potter, 1933.
Ymhlith uchafbwyntiau Archif Collingwood mae’r llythyr hwn gan yr awdures a darlunydd llyfrau plant bythol boblogaidd Beatrix Potter, wedi ei arwyddo dan ei henw priod ‘Beatrix Heelis’. Ysgrifenna at Barbara ynghylch gweld lluniau dyfrlliw W. G. Collingwood. Gŵr Beatrix, William Heelis, oedd y cyfreithiwr a oruchwyliodd ewyllys R. G. Collingwood. |
Letter from Beatrix Potter, 1933.
Among the highlights of the Collingwood Archive is this letter from the ever popular children’s author and illustrator, Beatrix Potter, signed under her married name of ‘Beatrix Heelis’. She writes to Barbara about viewing W. G. Collingwood’s watercolour paintings. Beatrix’s husband, William Heelis, was the solicitor who oversaw R. G. Collingwood’s will. |
Llythyr oddi wrth E. M. Forster, 1916.
Mae’r llythyr hwn gan yr awdur E. M. Forster yn disgrifio effaith bersonol ac artistig y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf. Gwyddys llawer am heddychiaeth Forster, ond mae’r datguddiadau yn y llythyr hwn yn ymddangos yn fwy personol nag unrhyw beth arall a geir ganddo. Ysgrifenna at ei ffrind: |
Letter from E. M. Forster, 1916.
This letter from author E. M. Forster describes the personal and artistic impact of the First World War. Much is known of Forster’s pacifism but the revelations in this letter appear to be more personal than any found elsewhere. He writes to his friend: “— as this war drags on to its dreary and arithmetical conclusion if to any conclusion at all, the passion in me for all that old High-life and High-art business of which I used to be rather ashamed, seems to increase and express itself less fearlessly.” |
Llythyr gan Arthur Ransome, dechrau'r 20fed ganrif.
Mae Archif Collingwood yn cynnwys bron i 200 o lythyrau gan Arthur Ransome, awdur Swallows and Amazons yr amheuir o fod yn asiant dwbl. Ysgrifennwyd y rhain at amryw aelodau o’r teulu ac maent yn dyddio rhwng 1904 i’r 1960au. Maent yn cyfle cyfle unigryw i ail-archwilio bywyd a gwaith un o’r awduron llyfrau plant mwyaf enigmatig o’r ugeinfed ganrif. Anfonodd y llythyr penodol hwn, a ysgrifennwyd yn siâp potel feddyginiaeth, at Barbara tra oedd yn sâl, yn y gobaith y byddai’n ei helpu i deimlo’n well. Letter from Arthur Ransome, early 20th century.
The Collingwood Archive contains almost 200 letters from Arthur Ransome, author of Swallows and Amazons and suspected double agent. These are written to various members of the family and date from 1904 to the 1960s. They offer a unique opportunity to re-examine the life and writings of one of the most enigmatic children’s writers of the twentieth century. He sent this particular letter, written in the shape of a medicine bottle, to Barbara while she was unwell, in the hope that it would aid her recovery. |
Llythyrau gan John Ruskin, 1870-1900.
Cyfarfu Gershom â John Ruskin tra oedd yn fyfyriwr yng Ngholeg y Brifysgol, Rhydychen. Daeth, i bob pwrpas, yn ysgrifennydd preifat Ruskin ac un o’i gyfrinachyddion agosaf. Fe adleolodd er mwyn bod yn agos at Ruskin; roedd Lanehead, cartref y teulu Collingwood, ddim ond filltir i ffwrdd o Brantwood, cartref Ruskin yn Coniston. Ymhlith nifer o bynciau eraill, maent yn gohebu ynghylch gwaith ei gilydd, celf, daeareg, petroloeg, awduraeth ac ysbrydoliaeth, llenyddiaeth ganoloesol, a theithio. Mae llythyrau yn Archif Collingwood yn dogfennu eu perthynas yn fanwl, ac maent yn adnodd ymchwil posib sydd heb eu harchwilio, a all ysgogi diwygiadau mawr mewn astudiaethau Ruskin. Letters from John Ruskin, 1870s-1900.
Gershom met John Ruskin while he was a student at University College, Oxford. He became, in effect, Ruskin’s private secretary and one of his closest confidants. He relocated to be near Ruskin; Lanehead, the Collingwood’s family home was just a mile away from Brantwood, Ruskin’s home in Coniston. Among other subjects, they correspond about each other’s work, art, geology, petrology, authorship and inspiration, medieval literature, and travel. Letters in the Collingwood Archive document their relationship extensively, and are a largely untapped resource of potential research that may prompt major revisions in Ruskin studies. |
Llythyr am sgandal Ruskin,
R. G. Collingwood, 26 Chwefror 1934. Mae’r llythyr hwn a ysgrifennwyd gan Robin ac a anfonwyd at ei chwaer Barbara yn cynnig mewnwelediad prin i faterion dadleuol priodas ddirymedig Ruskin ag Effie Grey a’i rywioldeb. Mae’n rhyfedd am J. R. a’r straeon hynny. Ni chlywais air am y sgandalau hynny o’r blaen, ac roedd eich datguddiadau’n dipyn o syndod imi. Ac wrth gwrs, wn i ddim a ydwyf yn credu’r straeon ai peidio [...] Rydym yn gwybod o bentyrrau anwadadwy o dystiolaeth yr hyn roedd yn ei deimlo ynghylch y cyfryw ferched... Dywedodd Dadi wrthyf, fel rhywbeth ‘y dylwn ei wybod’, bod y cyhuddiad o analluedd a oedd yn sail i’r ysgariad yn gwbl anwir. Letter about a Ruskin scandal,
R. G. Collingwood, 26 February 1934. This letter written by Robin and sent to his sister Barbara provides a rare insight into the controversial matters of Ruskin’s annulled marriage to Effie Grey and his sexuality: It is curious about J. R. and those stories. I never heard a word about those scandals before, and your revelations were a complete surprise to me. And of course I don’t know whether to believe the stories or not. […] We know from heaps of unimpeachable evidence what he felt about girls as such… Daddy told me, as a thing I ‘ought to know’ that the allegation of impotence which was the ground on which Effie divorced J.R. was entirely untrue. |
